Have a Listen to Sara & Paula

Sara Thomsen, who will be new to some of you, is a full-time singer-songwriter who is very well known in the north-central US and the Twin Ports area (Duluth, MN and Superior, WI) where she and Paula live and work. Sara grew up surrounded by a family and community that loved to sing.  From listening to her father sing lullabies and onward, Sara’s life has been infused with music. She is a staunch supporter of struggles for human dignity and ecological sustainability. Slowing down enough to see and hear the vibrant wonder of the commonplace is her work and play.  All this can be felt in her music. Whether it is a song welcoming a newborn, protesting a policy, depicting night falling or describing a loved one, her music is alive and pulsing.
Sara’s performing and life partner, Paula Pedersen, is an accomplished singer in her own right, often doing concerts with Sara and singing vocals on several of Sara’s CD’s. She is also an integral part of two albums recorded by The Three Altos (Paula, Sara, and Rabbi Amy Bernstein).  When she’s not busy with her musical pursuits, Paula carries on a distinguished academic career, currently as Director of Education for Inclusive Excellence at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Just knowing that, by the way, makes us feel doubly lucky that she is able to be here with Sara for this concert.

Here is what some of Sara’s admirers have said:

“Sara’s voice is like the best butter you’ve ever had – on a big, generous meltingly gorgeous piece of bread right out of the oven. Hearing Sara is like coming home to your own soul; her music is cozy and big all at the same time. The first time I heard her, I cried for joy. Real tears.”  - Nancy Conger, Minnesota author, playwright, violinist, coach
“I was impressed by Sara’s ability to draw the audience into her songs, not just through singing, but through her presence. There seemed to be no barrier between the performer and the audience; it was as if a group of friends had gathered to spend an evening together.” -Julie Flotten, Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, Finland, MN
